I responded to sophie below, if you're interested. The basic gist of it was that the call to nodeid() really should have been just a getter, or a getter with a cheap check in it, and if it were then the gains from those optimizations probably would have been minimal. But nodeid() had a call to preload_rows(), and preload_rows() was potentially expensive, and avoiding that was the big win there.
